Listening to the Body: Yoga, Mindfulness, and Self-Compassion
Limited Capacity seats available

Constant multi-sensory overload and the pressure to produce, can add chronic stress, even trauma, to everyday life. We suffer from this form of daily trauma, and yet often feel compelled to push ourselves harder. Often, our body pays the price as much as our mind and emotions. In this workshop, we'll briefly explore the compelling science behind self-compassion, and why it's more effective than self-esteem. Drawing upon the traditions of yoga, mindfulness, and contemplative studies, we'll experience several practical, body-based methods of working with self-compassion that can be integrated into any yoga class or somatic meditation practice.

Turn Up the Heat: Rejuvenate Your Sun-Salutations

all levels

Sun Salutations are the heart of Vinyasa flow classes, opening limitless possibilities for the body and mind. With power and grace, they draw us in from outside distractions, heightening concentration and presence. The cleansing heat increases flexibility in the hips, hamstrings, and shoulders, while simultaneously strengthening the abdominal area. The sequence as a whole offers many of the benefits of inversions. In this workshop, we will have fun deconstructing the key poses within Sun Salutations, and exploring variations and modifications. Putting it all together with breath and movement, we will practice key poses to build a strong foundation of understanding so that shoulders and lower back are safe and happy.

Yoga for A Great Attitude: Inversions and Heart Opening
Limited Capacity seats available

Need an attitude adjustment? It goes without saying that yoga itself, no matter what kind you do, helps with your attitude - but there are definitely some poses that are inherently more mood enhancing than others. Give yourself a healthy dose of heart opening, shoulder yumminess, inversions, side bends, counter poses and a relaxing restorative savasana and leave with tools to shift your state when you need it most. Mostly asana.

This class will be assisted by experienced yoga teachers who have trained intimately with Amy, so expect ample hands on adjustments (if you’d like them)!

Body Maps: The Road to Healthy Aging, Pain Modulation, and Emotional Balance
Limited Capacity seats available

Our brain contains its own body map--a mental representation of our body and its functions. Far from being a neural entity, our body map is vital to the way in which we age, as well as to our pain modulation and emotional regulation. First, we'll explore the science behind body maps as it touches on these key areas of wellness. We'll then experience a body map-enriching, vinyasa-inspired, movement-infused yoga practice; a connective-tissue hydrating minipractice; and a brief, therapeutic, and restorative Savasana. Asana with discussion.

Injury Prevention and Recovery
Limited Capacity seats available

Getting injured is an inevitable part of life and if we're wise, we can learn some of the most valuable lessons from our injuries. As a yoga practitioner our aim is to injure ourselves and others as little as possible in everything we do including asana. To do this we must learn and teach the difference between beneficial discomfort and injurious pain. The injurious pain signal is one that requires an immediate change in approach and is a call to attention that something is about to go very wrong, but even when we're incredibly diligent sometimes we still make errors in judgment and get injured. When an injury occurs the road back to health can be a scary and frustrating one but it doesn't have to be. In this workshop, we'll explore how to prevent injuries from happening by understanding the range of motion joints have and how to ask our students not to move past the limits of their physical structure. We'll then further this and look at how to approach healing once an injury has occurred both physically and most importantly how to handle the mind's thoughts about injury and the recovery process.

Yoga & Pranayama. Breath is our most elemental form of life and unites all of humanity yet we think little about it. The ancient yogis dedicated great thought to it and in so doing developed intricate methods of harnessing breath to gain control of the mind and to see the world with greater clarity. This class will delve into the unseen realms of mystical yogic breathing and the magical internal energy valves known as bandhas. There is much confusion surrounding these powerful tools and the part they play in the regulation and control of pranic flow. David will share information he gained directly from K. Pattabhi Jois as well as a series of practical exercises he has developed himself. Through partner work, discussion and specialized techniques participants will gain new insights and useful tools for personal practice and daily life. Hip Opening & Meditation for Inner Peace
Limited Capacity seats available

The hips can be a major obstacle to our ability to be at peace in our bodies, however the hips can also be one of the more resistant areas of the body to work with and for many of us we spend much of our yoga practice attempting to “open the hips.” We have an idea of what we think our hips should be like and we continue to stretch this area hoping that one day it will pay off and even if it does we continue to dig deeper and deeper. But there is one critical internal system often overlooked that is essential for releasing & balancing this area that has little to do with the poses or our alignment. We’ll look at how to tap into this to work more deeply through the layers that can restrict us in order to prepare out bodies for meditation. Hip opening can potentially affect the back, neck, legs and even shoulders as its place in the center of our body intimately affects everything else but more importantly it’s a large obstacle to both meditation and our sense of peace in our body. This will be an insightful & experiential class with a brief lecture at the start followed by a slow flow and some static postures to assist this hip opening class concluding with a short meditation at the end to help you tap into this experience of inner peace. This is a gentle flow class open to all levels with some vinyasa experience.

The Shoulder Girdle Mantra: Unlocking the power of the upper body

For Teachers/ mixed levels

Strong shoulders and proper shoulder alignment are essential to a healthy Vinyasa Flow practice. Think of how often you find yourself in chaturanga, upward-facing dog, and downward-facing dog. Focusing on these key poses, we will examine common patterns of misalignment in the shoulders and use our practice together to imprint strong alignment habits that protect the shoulders from injury. Creating a solid new foundation, learn powerful mini-sequences that you can do every day in order to strengthen and open your shoulder girdle, deepen your sun salutations, and revolutionize your entire practice. Notes: Discussion and asana.
