Be Like Buddha: Yoga Postures and Metta Practice to Inspire Peace
Limited Capacity seats available

Evolve your practice by learning what a metta practice is and how it may help you embody feelings of peace and kindness. The Buddha was a yogi who attained tremendous peace inside. Through yoga practice, the Buddha cultivated a firm spine, open hip joints and a big heart to embody great joy. Let’s explore how we as yogis and yoginis come by that same joy. We will combine the powerful techniques of yoga posture and pranayama with the clear and poignant teachings of the Buddha dharma. Learn to use asana to strengthen the body and metta (loving-kindness) practice to embody feelings of kindness, sensitivity, and peace. Beyond asana, you will experience poems of awakening, guided meditation, somatic awareness, and chants resulting in a sophisticated integration of yoga and mindfulness as a means to cultivate peace and self-knowledge.

Chinese Medicine Principles: A Teacher’s Intensive
Limited Capacity seats available

This all day intensive takes a look at the basic principles of Chinese Medicine and their application to working one-on-one with your students. In order to treat dysfunction in Chinese Medicine the practitioner must look at both the root and the branches, meaning that the symptoms (branches) are not separate from one’s constitution (roots) and in order to achieve health and eliminate dysfunction of any kind (injuries, illnesses or general well-being) we must address both. In this class we will explore the foundations of Chinese Medicine as is applicable specifically to yoga teachers. The information you take away will help you start to investigate working with both the root & the branches within your private lessons to help increase the effectiveness of your work with your students. The beauty of Chinese Medicine is that our health is a constant balancing act so whether you are sick or just looking to feel better you can take some info away from this to experiment with. This class is mostly lecture with a short all levels asana practice before lunch. This class is for teachers and anyone interested in learning more about Chinese Medicine principles & energetics. Bring a pen & paper to take notes on and come ready to take in a lot of information.

Cultivating Resilience: Inner Peace in the Mind, Brain, and Body
Limited Capacity seats available

Our modern nervous systems contend with multi-sensory overload, the pressure to produce, an ever-expanding cyberspace, and an endless stream of opportunities to compare ourselves to others. It’s a paradox: most of us seek the balm of inner calm and stillness. And yet, emerging research shows that we benefit more from resilience: the ability to feel challenges fully and return to balance. In this all-day workshop, we’ll experience several practical tools to create resilience—and thus, an “elastic” concept of inner peace—in the mind, brain, and body. We’ll draw from the traditions of yoga, mindfulness, neuroscience, contemplative practice to find ways to remain centered and flexible in a world that is out of balance. Tools will include embodied meditation, mindful movement, connective tissue release work, and more.

Infinite Practices, Few Basic Principles: How Seasoned Teachers Build Meaningful Yoga Classes That Hook Their Students

You don’t have to rely solely on the formulas you learned in teacher training to get out of that teaching rut. Join The Art of Teaching Yoga mentors, Alexandria Crow, and Giselle Mari, for a full-day workshop for teachers that will demystify the process of creating classes that are effective and inspiring for you and your students.

Tools, Talents & Techniques for Teachers Presenting Yoga to the Individual for Health, Healing and Happiness
Limited Capacity seats available

Every class that we teach can be considered a mixed-level class. This means special attention needs to be paid to those that are not readily able to do an asana or grasp an instruction. This requires patience, insight, sensitivity, experience and the ability to communicate clearly. This class will look at ways to work with people with a healthy, strong body as well as those with injuries or special conditions. By learning to recognize inherent lines of energy comprising an asana the teacher can discover ways of bringing the student into harmony within those lines. David calls this approach of observation: ”Equality of Opposition and the Six Directions”.  There will be an initial Q and A to explore specific conditions and situations followed by practical work with partners to apply the techniques. There will be lots of hands-on adjusting methods shared. David has an amazing ability to provide great depth of experience while also keeping the room full with joy and excitement! Open to Teachers, Seekers and General Enthusiasts of Yoga!

Ultimate Restorative and Self Care Techniques with Rodney and Colleen Saidman Yee; Foundations of UZIT. at Yoga Journal LIVE San Francisc
Limited Capacity seats available
You need this ticket from Eventbrite to sign up: UZIT Urban Zen Integrative Therapy On-Site Training.
Friday 1pm-5pm; Saturday 9am-5pm, Sunday 9am-5pm

Urban Zen Integrative Therapy (UZIT), created by Colleen Saidman Yee and Rodney Yee is a holistic care method that relies on the synergistic effects of in-bed movements, restorative yoga poses, breath-awareness exercises, meditation, essential oils, Reiki (energy balancing), nutrition, and contemplative care. UZIT-trained therapists work in a wide range of settings, from hospitals to rehab centers to senior-care and hospice facilities across the United States, helping patients and health care workers. The practice is also useful for any one interested in taking care of family and friends. UZIT has been shown to ease insomnia, pain, anxiety, nausea, insomnia, and constipation (referred to as PANIC)—things that are amplified during illness or a hospital stay but that we experience in daily life too.

In this three-day workshop you will learn basic UZIT strategies for relieving and reducing burnout. The skills you learn in San Francisco will  prepare you for the full UZIT training, which includes an additional 12 in-person training days, over the course of four months.

Each training day at San Francisco begins with a yoga class that includes active and restorative poses, breath work, and meditation. This practice is followed by lectures, discussions, and practices related to UZIT modalities, including.:

Yoga therapy: In-chair and in-bed mindful movements, restorative yoga, breath awareness, and guided body awareness meditation
  • Essential oil therapy: Protocol for using three therapeutic-grade essential oils—lavender, lemon, and peppermint—and information on using other single oils and blends

  • Nutrition: Nutritional information as a form of self-care for UZITs.

  • Contemplative Care: Training and practice in the ability to stay present, calm, and effective in the midst of suffering

You’ll learn how to layer these modalities to address the symptoms of PANIC in yourself so that you can be more grounded, relaxed, and restored, and be present as your serve others. As Roshi Joan Halifax, a Buddhist teacher and pioneer in the field of end-of-life care, says, “Healthcare without self-care is sick care.”

The Inner Dimensions of Practice
Limited Capacity seats available

Meditation is an ancient practice, found in all the world’s religious traditions, linking the hearts and minds of practitioners to sources of guidance, inspiration, and/or the Divine. Modern scientific and medical research are demonstration the incredible health benefits of mediation for the brain and physiology. Beyond the physiological level, through meditation we can deepen our self-awareness and gain mastery over our minds. Dysfunctional patterns at the level of thought, feeling, and behavior create attachment, identification, suffering, and entanglement. The Ancient Yogi’s recognized that the root of these dysfunctional patterns is the conditioned mind. They developed the sequence of meditation to understand, transform, and ultimately master the mind. Mastering the mind, according to the Ancients is the path to Self or God realization, fulfillment, and ultimate liberation. In this session we will:
- study the last 4 limbs of Patanjali’s Astanga Yoga
- learn methods of practice from the Yoga Tradition of Meditation
- explore how to use these methods to directly influence our thoughts, feeling, and behavior
Lecture and practice.

Listening to the Body: Yoga, Mindfulness, and Self-Compassion
Limited Capacity seats available

Constant multi-sensory overload and the pressure to produce, can add chronic stress, even trauma, to everyday life. We suffer from this form of daily trauma, and yet often feel compelled to push ourselves harder. Often, our body pays the price as much as our mind and emotions. In this workshop, we'll briefly explore the compelling science behind self-compassion, and why it's more effective than self-esteem. Drawing upon the traditions of yoga, mindfulness, and contemplative studies, we'll experience several practical, body-based methods of working with self-compassion that can be integrated into any yoga class or somatic meditation practice.

Need an attitude adjustment? It goes without saying that yoga itself, no matter what kind you do, helps with your attitude - but there are definitely some poses that are inherently more mood enhancing than others. Give yourself a healthy dose of heart opening, shoulder yumminess, inversions, side bends, counter poses and a relaxing restorative savasana and leave with tools to shift your state when you need it most. Mostly asana.

Strong + Stable + Safe Shoulders
Limited Capacity seats available

The highly mobile and beautifully intricate nature of the shoulder girdle makes it one of the most vulnerable parts of your body—especially for flow or vinyasa yogis. The nuances of the shoulder girdle also make giving accurate, scientifically rationale cues very challenging for teachers to provide. Unfortunately, this combination of challenges leads to an excessive number of injuries and long-term wear and tear. Until now. This intensive will demystify the anatomy of your shoulders, give you a comprehensive rationale for using your shoulders in every category of yoga posture, and educate you about the common sources of shoulder injuries in yoga. This intensive will also dispel some of the common misunderstandings about how the shoulders function in yoga postures. Lastly, you’ll learn a comprehensive practice for keeping your shoulders strong, stable and balanced—setting you up for a lifetime of more efficient, safe yoga. Mostly asana.

Injury Prevention and Recovery
Limited Capacity seats available

Getting injured is an inevitable part of life and if we're wise, we can learn some of the most valuable lessons from our injuries. As a yoga practitioner our aim is to injure ourselves and others as little as possible in everything we do including asana. To do this we must learn and teach the difference between beneficial discomfort and injurious pain. The injurious pain signal is one that requires an immediate change in approach and is a call to attention that something is about to go very wrong, but even when we're incredibly diligent sometimes we still make errors in judgment and get injured. When an injury occurs the road back to health can be a scary and frustrating one but it doesn't have to be. In this workshop, we'll explore how to prevent injuries from happening by understanding the range of motion joints have and how to ask our students not to move past the limits of their physical structure. We'll then further this and look at how to approach healing once an injury has occurred both physically and most importantly how to handle the mind's thoughts about injury and the recovery process.

Cultivating Inner Peace
Limited Capacity seats available

What does it mean to embody and actively cultivate peace? How do we as individuals, commit to a conscious path of creating peace in our lives, communities, nations and world if we disown the aggressive, helpless, devastated, fragmented, traumatized or shut down parts of us that need to be seen or known? When a big or small trauma or loss occurs in our life, that event is stored in our cells and soma (body) as well as in our mind (psyche). This disruption or fragmentation plays out in our life in ways sometimes unconscious to us, causing us to sometimes repeat deregulating patterns that continue to hurt us, or others around us. In order to understand peace, we must face and understand these self-sabotaging patterns that we become familiar with that keep us hyper-aroused, in a trance, addicted to stress and in a defensive reactive mode. Through yoga and embodied practices, we can teach the body to heal itself through re-connecting these fragmented energetic and neural pathways. In this intensive, Seane will take you through an introspective and provocative yoga practice that will help you:
  • Discharge tension in your body and open up your energy centers.
  • Activate the internal self-healing messages that help bridge the soma and psyche.
  • Explore peace through an experiential practice
  • Participate in creative discussions to active conscious participation in the re- creating of “peace” and what that looks like in your personal expression of truth.
  • Learn how committing to this in your daily practice contributes to becoming a change agent in your family, your relationships and ultimately the world.

Part asana, part discussion. All levels welcome.

Awake & Alive: A Flow for Vibrancy with Anne Marie Kramer
Limited Capacity seats available

Though active movement — flowing, twisting and jumping — we'll get out of our heads and into our bodies. So many of us share the feeling of being run down, tired or in a rut. We'll use the yoga to turn all this around and create more energy in our lives, so we feel vibrant, awake and alive. And of course, part of feeling vibrant is finding balance. We'll combine vinyasa with some time for yin and meditation to create an experience that leaves you feeling grounded yet ready to take on your day!

Yoga for Inner Peace
Limited Capacity seats available

What happens when women get together? Something immeasurably powerful and transformative can come from the support of other women. We set down our barriers and dwell in our commonalities, compassion, and understanding. Even though this is only a half of day, the goal is to leave you feeling like you have just been on a weeklong women’s retreat. In her 20 years of teaching women’s retreats, Saidman Yee has come to understand that a lot of times we are struggling with similar issues and thinking that we are alone. Emotional needs of a woman are different from those of a man. We will target common areas where tension, trauma, and secrets can be buried with the intension of unleashing joy. We will use asana, pranayama, meditation, journaling and dialogue to dig into areas that keep us stuck. Why and where are we stuck? What are we afraid of? Are we living our potential? Are we using our voices to speak our truth? Do we understand our importance and validity? We will experiment with practices that address issues such as forgiveness and confidence. We will explore different tools that unlock bindings in the body, breath, and brain that keep you from realizing that you are enough.

Prana in the Belly: Revitalizing our Enteric Nervous System
Limited Capacity seats available

We now know that our gut, far from being a primal mechanism, is highly intelligent, acts independently of the brain, and regulates immunity and emotional health. In this workshop, we’ll explore the vast influence of the enteric nervous system on health and well-being, including its interaction with many inner systems that promote mind-body integration. We'll re-envision our current concept of what makes a resilient core body (hint: it’s not all about strength), and experience practices that release physical and emotional tension and stagnation in the abdominal area, increase "prana in the belly," promote physical and emotional digestion, improve mind-body awareness, and enhance emotional immunity. Asana with discussion.

Hip Opening & Meditation for Inner Peace
Limited Capacity seats available

The hips can be a major obstacle to our ability to be at peace in our bodies, however the hips can also be one of the more resistant areas of the body to work with and for many of us we spend much of our yoga practice attempting to “open the hips.” We have an idea of what we think our hips should be like and we continue to stretch this area hoping that one day it will pay off and even if it does we continue to dig deeper and deeper. But there is one critical internal system often overlooked that is essential for releasing & balancing this area that has little to do with the poses or our alignment. We’ll look at how to tap into this to work more deeply through the layers that can restrict us in order to prepare out bodies for meditation. Hip opening can potentially affect the back, neck, legs and even shoulders as its place in the center of our body intimately affects everything else but more importantly it’s a large obstacle to both meditation and our sense of peace in our body. This will be an insightful & experiential class with a brief lecture at the start followed by a slow flow and some static postures to assist this hip opening class concluding with a short meditation at the end to help you tap into this experience of inner peace. This is a gentle flow class open to all levels with some vinyasa experience.

The Art and Science of iRest Yoga Nidra Meditation: For Health, Healing, Resiliency, and Well-Being
Limited Capacity seats available

Join Richard Miller for this interactive workshop, where he shares the principles and practices that underlie the Integrative Restoration - iRest Yoga Nidra Meditation protocol that he’s developed over the past 46 years, which will expose you to a tapestry of tools that you can interweave into your personal or professional practices of hatha yoga, pranayama and meditation, as well as into your daily activities, relationships, or therapeutic-oriented work with students or clients.

iRest Meditation is a research-proven meditation protocol that is being used worldwide to relieve stress, nourish deep relaxation, restore vibrant health, sound sleep and resiliency, heal trauma and physical and mental issues, recover well-being, as well as to awaken to our underlying essential undivided wholeness with all of life. Grounded in over 25 research studies, the US Army Surgeon General and the Defense Centers of Excellence have recognized iRest as a Complimentary Alternative Program for healing chronic pain and PTSD, and restoring resiliency and well-being. iRest is making substantial contributions to the recovery of wounded veterans, and is now being taught in over 60 VA and Department of Defense sites in the US. With over 2500 trained practitioners, iRest is being taught at hospitals, clinics, and yoga centers worldwide. iRest offers a veritable 'Google-Map' for those traversing the complex road of health, healing, well-being, and awakening.

Through interactive dialogue and in-depth guided iRest meditations, Richard shares how this approach to meditation, health, and healing unfolds in distinct phases along a 38-step map of meditation drawn from the ancient teachings of Samkhya-Patañjali, Advaita, and Kashmir Nondual Yoga that incorporates three levels of mindfulness, seven core principles, and ten key practices. Richard will address current research on the neuroscience of meditation that underscores iRest. Class handout includes the map of meditation, foundational principles and practices, and resources for continuing your ongoing practice and learning.
