With so much information available to teachers, it can seem overwhelming to create meaningful classes that feel like your own. You don’t have to rely solely on the formulas you learned in teacher training to get out of that teaching rut. Join The Art of Teaching Yoga mentors, Alexandria Crow, and Giselle Mari, for a full-day workshop for teachers that will demystify the process of creating classes that are effective and inspiring for you and your students.
By leading 30-minute practices leading to one pose, Alex and Giselle will show you that their different teaching styles have similar and basic common principles. Through in-depth group discussions and workshopping your questions throughout the day, you’ll discover how to apply these principles to design solid sequences, understand how to offer verbal cues and hands-on assists, handle injury prevention and management, and integrate philosophy more fully. Don’t miss this opportunity to simplify and unpack the process of developing your unique teaching style and creating balanced classes that keep students coming back to learn more.

Turn Up the Heat: Rejuvenate Your Sun-Salutations
all levels
Sun Salutations are the heart of Vinyasa flow classes, opening limitless possibilities for the body and mind. With power and grace, they draw us in from outside distractions, heightening concentration and presence. The cleansing heat increases flexibility in the hips, hamstrings, and shoulders, while simultaneously strengthening the abdominal area. The sequence as a whole offers many of the benefits of inversions. In this workshop, we will have fun deconstructing the key poses within Sun Salutations, and exploring variations and modifications. Putting it all together with breath and movement, we will practice key poses to build a strong foundation of understanding so that shoulders and lower back are safe and happy.

Yoga & Pranayama. Breath is our most elemental form of life and unites all of humanity yet we think little about it. The ancient yogis dedicated great thought to it and in so doing developed intricate methods of harnessing breath to gain control of the mind and to see the world with greater clarity. This class will delve into the unseen realms of mystical yogic breathing and the magical internal energy valves known as bandhas. There is much confusion surrounding these powerful tools and the part they play in the regulation and control of pranic flow. David will share information he gained directly from K. Pattabhi Jois as well as a series of practical exercises he has developed himself. Through partner work, discussion and specialized techniques participants will gain new insights and useful tools for personal practice and daily life. David will end the class by leading a session of classical pranayama and breath control. The prana is awaiting your arrival!

Every January, for the New Year, there is an opportunity to let go of the old and bring in the new. This class is about both physically detoxing the body, as well as the mind and heart, letting go of old patterns and beliefs, and creating space for new creativity to enter in, while setting intentions and clearing a new pathway towards heart-filled purpose. The yoga sequences in this workshop will utilize three internal components for cleansing-abdominal compression, decompression and twists, and will include Sun Salutations A and B, detox standing sequences, inverted poses, breathing exercises and a restorative cool down. This intensive is designed to help us identity, reconcile and heal restrictive emotional patterns and physical imbalances in our mind/body. It is for all levels, but will be challenging, provocative and create heat. Some discussion/mostly asana.

Hands-on assists can be a potent tool for teachers to communicate alignments and refinements in their students’ asana practice. One of the quickest ways for students to understand and embody the mechanics, depth, and beauty of an asana is through touch, which will also enriches their experience of your teachings. We will dive into the more common asanas assists with partners. We will focus on how to observe form, breath, alignment, energetics of asana, and ultimately how to assist. As the assister, we will explore the imperative of preserving our bodies through leveraging bandhas, breath, and our connection to the earth while providing the practitioner with safe assists that support and deepen their experience and understanding of asana.

Yoga Alliance grew to over 75K members in 2016. Basically they got HUGE. They also took some controversial positions; i.e. The policy on Yoga Therapy and Yoga Regulation. 2017 promises to be a year with new regulatory challenges to the yoga industry in California. This is your chance to speak directly to Yoga Alliance's Chief Ambassador Andrew Tanner. Ask questions and get answers about issues that are important to you. Also to find out about resources that YA has to support your teaching, business or non-profit. Local yoga hero Darren Main, Director of Yoga Tree teacher trainings will be here to moderate.
